Urban Forestry Instructor, Casey Trees, Washington DC

Casey Trees, a Washington-based non-profit dedicated to restoring, enhancing and protecting the tree canopy of the Nation's Capital, seeks candidates to fill the Urban Forestry Instructor position. Ideal candidates are positive individuals with excellent urban forestry, presentation, communication and organizational skills who enjoy interacting with the public and are dedicated to the mission of Casey Trees.

Responsibilities

  • Present urban forestry focused classes on tree identification and biology, tree planting and general tree health. Class size is usually around 25-30 participants.
  • Lead monthly tree walks around the District to teach tree identification and tree biology and anatomy.
  • Assist Casey Trees staff with revision of adult education curriculum.
  • including mulching, watering, and pruning. The service component consists of community tree planting and maintenance projects.
  • Work with the Director of Education to create new outreach classes.
  • Oversee and coordinate the purchase, use and maintenance of all supplies, materials, and equipment related to all Casey Trees Citizen Forester classes.

Qualifications

  • It is preferred but not required that the ideal candidate will possess:
  • Bachelor's degree and two to four years demonstrated success in presenting on forestry and /or urban forestry issues or equivalent experience in urban forestry.
  • A strong forestry and/or urban forestry background.
  • A commitment to urban forestry, conservation and environmental education in urban areas;
  • Professional demeanor, superior written and oral communications skills and the ability to interact and work with a variety of urban audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Creativity, flexibility, confidence and positive spirit a must.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Manage multiple activities simultaneously.
  • Must be able to establish, track and meet deadlines, often under pressure.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and ability to learn new programs required.
  • Must be flexible to work evenings, weekends and extended hours when needed.

Term: 6 months with the possibility of renewal.

Compensation: Starting salary: $16,500 – $17,000 commensurate with experience and salary history. Competitive benefit package includes medical insurance, paid leave.
